Can I design a map of land I don't own?

Yes — that's most gifts. Zoom to their place, pick the parcel, and put their name on the title block. Parcel boundaries come from public county records.

What makes it a good closing gift?

It's the property itself — their boundaries, their acreage, their name — not another cutting board. It hangs on the wall of the house you closed, with your relationship attached to it.

What surfaces does it come on?

Fine paper, canvas, or engraved metal — including brass, the one that reads as an heirloom the day it's unwrapped.

Do I need to know their exact acreage or coordinates?

No. Once you pick the parcel, the county record carries the boundary, and the title block fills from the map itself. You bring the name; the land brings the rest.
